Grey Iron Castings to ASTM A48
Anaya Enterprises pours grey iron, known as gray iron in the United States, in every ASTM A48 class from Class 20 to Class 55. Classes 20 to 45 have EN-GJL equivalents to EN 1561, from EN-GJL-100 to EN-GJL-350, shown in the grade table.
We cast by sand mould or no-bake moulding. Our custom manufacturing team machines castings to your drawings, so you can order a finished component rather than a raw casting.
Reading an A48 Class
The class number is the minimum tensile strength of the test bar in thousands of pounds per square inch (ksi): Class 30 grey iron has a minimum tensile strength of 30 ksi, and Class 40 of 40 ksi. EN 1561 grades give the minimum tensile strength in megapascals instead, so EN-GJL-250 means 250 MPa.
Why Grey Iron
- Machinability: the graphite flakes break the chips and lubricate the cut, so grey iron machines easily.
- Vibration damping: the flakes absorb vibration, which is why grey iron is used for machine bases, frames and housings.
- Wear and compressive strength: it suits sliding surfaces, liners and brake parts.
- Castability: it flows well into thin and complex sections.
Grey iron has low ductility and impact strength. Where a part must bend or absorb shock rather than crack, consider ductile iron.
